Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Car

Spring

The return of spring means that it’s a great opportunity to get your affairs in order at home with a bit of spring cleaning. Once you’ve pared down your closet and spruced up your yard, take some time out and act on these great spring cleaning tips for your car.

Wash Your Car

Leaving winter debris and road salt residue on your vehicle doesn’t just make it look unsightly, it can also wear down the paint and cause significant problems over time. To avoid this, grab a bucket, soap, and the hose and wash your car when the weather turns warm. Scrub your car down and make sure to hose off the undercarriage to help prevent rust. Finally, dry the car in its entirety with a clean microfiber towel, and stand back to admire the shining result of your hard work.

Clean the Interior

You likely don’t take a lot of time to clean out your car in the winter, which means your floors and upholstery could be littered with leaves, salt, dirt, and even trash you just never got around to cleaning up. Now that warmer weather has arrived, it’s time to clean it all out. Clean out any trash, wash your floor mats, vacuum your carpeting and upholstery, and give all of your interior surfaces a much-needed wipe down.

If your spring cleaning checklist includes getting out of an old car and into a fresh new Chevrolet, we can help you here at Terryville Chevrolet.

Tips for Protecting Your Car from Road Salt

Car Covered With Snow

Although road salt does wonders for making snow-covered roads drivable again, it does a number to the undercarriage and side panels of your car. If left to fester, the corrosive substance will rust and chew away at the metal, which could be dangerous. Keep your car rust-free and protected from corrosion by following these road salt protection tips this winter.

  1. Pre-treat your car: Be ready for winter even before it hits. Give the whole vehicle a good wash and wax to shield it from salt, and have the undercarriage treated with an oil solution that does the same thing.
  2. Watch where you drive: Avoid getting close to snow plows, puddles of water, and piles of snow in parking lots. All of these places are filled with salt.
  3. Wash your vehicle: After a snowstorm passes and the plows return to their posts, head to a car wash to clean off the salt. Look for a place that offers a thorough under-spray.

According to the DMV, the most susceptible places on your car to salt damage are the exhaust system, muffler, coil springs, subframe, and hydraulic brake system. Pay particular attention to these areas washed when protecting your car from road salt.

If your car needs maintenance or repairs done this winter, bring your car to the Terryville Chevrolet service garage. We’ll gladly make sure your ride is ready for miles to come.
